abstractions – crystallized echoes of dRIVING through the city OF LOS ANGELES
SOLO SHOW, INGA GALLERY, TEL AVIV, IS
Inga Gallery is pleased to present new works by Ali Silverstein. For her inaugural exhibition with the gallery, Silverstein will present recent works made in her new studio in Los Angeles.
These “scapes” — large-scale constructions of painted and layered canvas assembled with thread and glue — are named after streets in Los Angeles. None represent physical reality or depict a particular place; rather, each work, and the collection as a whole, functions as an abstraction: a crystallized echo of driving through the city.
To move through Los Angeles by car is to confront an overwhelming multiplicity of layered images and impressions. These works emerge from the afterburn of those sensations, whether in the eye or the mind. Fragments and fugues of scallops and fringe, mountain ranges and architectural curves, recur throughout the works — a lexicon of forms abstracted and recontextualized not as landscape alone, but as inner-scape or culture-scape: a place where the interior meets the exterior.
